What Is Being? (And Why It’s Where We Start)
In The Compass system, everything begins with Being.
Not doing. Not having. Not even sharing. Those come later.
Being is who you are becoming.
It’s your identity—your traits, character, values, emotional baseline, and internal standards. It’s not just how you feel. It’s who you are when no one’s watching. It’s the story you carry, the virtues you pursue, the posture you hold—both physically and spiritually.
Being is the first of the Four Coordinates in The Compass because everything else flows from it:
Your Doing (habits, actions) expresses your Being.
Your Having (resources, health, stability) is filtered by what you believe you’re allowed to receive.
Your Sharing (relationships, contributions) is shaped by who you think you are and what you think you’re worth.
So when a client asks me where to start, I don’t ask, “What do you want to do?”
I ask, “Who do you want to be?”
Do you want to be steady? Disciplined? Joyful? Courageous? Present?
Then we build a plan around that.
In practice, working on Being means:
Clarifying your internal code (Standards).
Rewriting the self-defeating narratives (Stories).
Strengthening your baseline energy and emotional regulation (States).
Choosing identity-aligned habits that reinforce the person you’re becoming.
We don’t fake it. We forge it.
The truth is, every behavior you repeat is a vote for the kind of person you are becoming. So the work isn’t just about results—it’s about reinforcing an identity that’s resilient under pressure and aligned with your vision.
Being isn’t just where you start. It’s what holds the whole climb together.
You don’t need a new personality.
You need a new pattern of becoming.
Let’s build it.
