Wellspring Sunday: The Purpose of Man
One of mankind’s perennial questions is, “Why am I here?” It’s a question that most, if not all, of us ask ourselves at one time or another. And our answer to that question helps to shape the course of our lives.
Ultimately, our purpose is simple: glorify God and one day be glorified with Him. That’s it. Everything else is just noise. This isn’t about showing up for songs and speeches on Sunday mornings—it’s about making every moment a chance to honor the Creator. Paul made this clear when he said, "Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31). Every action and breath is an opportunity to serve something bigger than yourself.
The way that we go about doing that is going to differ from person to person. “God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.” (1 Corinthians 12:18-20) If you’re in Christ, you’re a part of that body, and you have a part to play, unique to you, in glorifying God.
But this isn’t just about you. It’s not even primarily about you. It’s about God and making His glory known to the world. God doesn’t need us to glorify Him, but we have the privilege to do so. When you share the gospel in word and deed, you’re making His glory visible, sowing it into more hearts and lives, and expanding the kingdom of God. That’s the mission.
The goal of the world and the ruler of this world is to distract you from that mission. The lust of the flesh and the eyes and the pride of life will keep you chasing things that don’t matter. They’re traps, pulling you away from your true purpose, luring you into the chase for temporary realities instead of eternal truths.
Jesus tells us to "seek first His kingdom and righteousness" (Matthew 6:33), not the cheap thrills the world sells. This isn’t some passive thing. Every day, you decide what matters. Every choice is a vote for who you want to be and how you want to live. You align your life with His will, focus on what counts, and trust that He’ll handle the rest.
But this isn’t just about surviving the distractions for your benefit. It’s about being a living, breathing witness to His truth. In your job, community, and family, you can show what it looks like to live for something real. This is how you spread God’s glory: by living it out in a world that’s forgotten what matters.
Jesus didn’t mince words—store your treasures in heaven, not here. That’s the perspective that changes everything. It makes you invest in relationships, kindness, sharing the gospel, and building up what lasts. When you live with that eternal focus, even suffering can’t shake you because your joy doesn’t come from circumstances. It comes from something unbreakable—your connection with God.
This whole process is leading to something. One day, you’ll be glorified with Him. Until then, your mission is clear: glorify God in everything, seek His kingdom first, and shine His glory like a beacon of light into every corner of this wayward world. That’s your purpose, and it’s the only thing that gives real meaning to this life.
In Christ, engage, adapt, and overcome.
