The Plunge: Change
Today, we're focusing on change—how to move from just thinking about it to making it happen. Understanding the stages of change is key to taking meaningful steps toward transforming your life. The goal? To get you thinking about what needs to change and how to start making it happen.
Change is the backbone of growth and living a fulfilled life. Whether it’s adopting healthier habits, deepening your spiritual practice, or improving relationships, change gets you closer to living the life you actually want. But let’s be clear—change isn’t instant. It’s a process that demands intention and effort.
Romans 12:2 says, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
Change starts in your head. Before you can change your actions, you need to change how you think. Three things are vital to the process:
First, change has to be a Priority. It has to be both important and urgent. It has to be a “must.” When it’s a must, you’ll commit yourself, and when you’ll be more likely to be consistent in your efforts.
Second, you have to take personal Responsibility for the change. It can’t be somebody else’s issue. You have to own it.
Third, you have to believe that you have the Ability to change. Without an enduring belief that you can change, you’ll be more susceptible to give up when the inevitable adversity you’ll experience hits you. Here, faith is indispensable. Remind yourself that where you can’t, God can. As Paul said in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Understanding the stages of change can help you figure out where you are in the process and what steps to take next.
The Stages of Change:
Precontemplation: You don’t see the problem yet. Maybe you’re unaware, or maybe you’re resisting the idea of change. Where do you feel stuck? What’s holding you back?
Contemplation: You start seeing the need for change but might feel uncertain or overwhelmed. What could you gain from changing? What’s standing in your way?
Preparation: You’re ready to plan. You set goals, gather information, and create a strategy. What can you do today to get ready for change? Who’s got your back?
Action: This is where change begins to take root. You start taking steps toward your goal. What can you do this week to move forward? How will you stay motivated? (See my previous newsletter on Habits.)
Maintenance: The focus shifts to sustaining the changes. It takes ongoing effort to avoid slipping back. How will you make the changes stick? What’s your strategy for staying on track?
Note: Relapse happens. If you slip, don’t beat yourself up. Use it as a chance to learn and adjust. If you stumble, how will you get back on track? What can you learn from it?
Some practical steps to move through these stages are:
Identify Areas for Change: Reflect on your life and pinpoint where change could better align you with your goals.
Set Clear, Achievable Goals: Break down the change into manageable steps to keep it from feeling overwhelming.
Seek Support: Share your goals with someone who can encourage you and hold you accountable.
Monitor Your Progress: Track your progress and celebrate small wins to keep your motivation high.
Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Setbacks happen—focus on learning and growth, not perfection.
Pray: We serve a God who has our best interest in mind and who wants us to turn to and rely upon Him.
Ask yourself:
What area of your life needs change the most?
Which stage of change are you in right now?
What steps can you take today to move forward?
Who can support you, and how will you reach out?
Take a few moments each day to reflect on where you are in the change process. Identify barriers and think about how to overcome them.
Meditate on Romans 12:2. Ask God to renew your mind and guide you through the change process.
Set a small, achievable goal for this week that will move you closer to the change you want.
By understanding and moving through the stages of change, you can take meaningful steps toward transforming your life and getting closer to your goals.
Take time today to think about what you need to change and how to move through the stages to make it happen.
As always, in Christ, engage, adapt, and overcome.
